Shelby student wins national FFA honor
  • November 13, 2013

render (Custom)

As a young girl, Chelsey Schlosnagle started selling eggs to friends, neighbors and church members as a fun way to be involved with the poultry on her parents’ farm.

“Maybe thirty dozen or so,” she said.

Little did she know that, about a decade later, she would have a flock of about 3,300 chickens and deals with area Whole Foods Markets in Louisville, Lexington and Cincinnati. That commitment and growth earned Schlosnagle, now a senior at Eastern Kentucky University, an American Star Award in Agribusiness for Chelsey’s Gourmet Pasture Eggs from the Future Farmers of America, which was presented during that group’s national convention earlier this month.

Each year the FFA recognizes four members with American Star Awards for outstanding accomplishments in FFA and agricultural education. The award is the most prestigious honor awarded to a student by the FFA. Agribusiness is one of four categories – Farmer, Agricultural Placement and Agriscience – in which Stars are named.

Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Showcase
  • March 29, 2013

Again this year, the Shelby County Chamber of Commerce set a goal of reaching out to the residents of Shelby County through its annual Chamber Showcase. In an effort to increase excitement for this year¹s event, Shelby County Farm Bureau partnered with the Chamber to offer a unique prize to a special group of potential attendees.

This year all elementary school students were notified that by attending the showcase, they would be entered to win a new Kindle Fire! The response was great and there was a record number of entries. Winners were selected at random and were surprised this week by a quick visit from Chamber Executive Director, Shelley Goodwin, administrative assistant Johnna Maier, and a representative from Shelby County Farm Bureau.

All of the students were appreciative of the gift, and the response from their classmates led us to believe next year will be another record year! Shelby County Farm Bureau was thankful for the opportunity to collaborate with the county Chamber of Commerce to support business, education, and community awareness.

Wow, what a day at Chamber Showcase. It was a grand slam home run for all involved. The Board conducted a successful membership drive, the Agency was able to solicit new insurance members as well as thank existing ones and maybe best of all some less fortunate kids in Shelby county won't go hungry over weekends away from school. The Farm Bureau effort to collect
food for the Backpack program was a huge success and gee it sure makes you feel special to help such a worthy cause. I attached a few pictures from the day. Please feel free to pass and remind folks that Farm Bureau is "Big on Commitment".
