The Wolfe County Farm Bureau Relay For Life team became “Team Smith” at the 2010 event this year and raised over $21,000 for The American Cancer Society.

The team was formed six years ago to raise money for ACS and is made up of Federation Board members, the Agency Manager, employees and members. Over the past six years, the team has raised nearly $100,000 for cancer research, advocacy, patient services, and education.

Our District 10 Area Program Director, Larry Smith, was diagnosed with advanced stage pancreatic cancer on Memorial Day weekend and passed away in late August, 2010. Larry was one of our most passionate supporters and a valuable member of our team. Each year, Larry hosted a cookout at Camp Smith to benefit our team. He also supported all our fundraisers by working and donating funds.

Several of our Federation Board Members are cancer survivors and feel that it is important that we give back to the organization that has been instrumental in funding researchers that have discovered early detection tests and cancer treatments. As the lead organization that supports farm families, we feel that this is one of the most important things that we can do to keep our members healthy.

“We have started fundraising for the 2011 Relay For Life and invite you to join us on the second Friday of 2011 at Campton Elementary School in Campton to walk throughout the night to raise funds and to honor our dear friend, Larry.” says Pam Pilgrim, Team Captain and Board Vice-President.

Other members of the team are County President and District 10 State Board Member Carroll Amyx, County Secretary and District 10 Women’s Chair Phyllis Amyx, Agency Manager Susan Cable, Agency CSR Lisa Hurst, Board members George Pilgrim and Barbara Stone, Farm Bureau members Suzy Prichard, John and Jessi Amyx, Barbara and Eric Hatton, and Wally Bush. Team Smith also had the distinction of having the youngest team member, Jacob Amyx and the oldest team member, Christine Pelfrey.
