Community Focus - Farm Safety Day Camp
- November 01, 2010
In partnership with the Wolfe County Conservation District, the UK Cooperative Extension Service and the Wolfe County School District, the Wolfe County Farm Bureau Federation sponsored the Progressive Farmer Safety Day Camp for 6th graders in the county. The event was held in May 2010 at the historic Hazel Green Fire Department.
Linda Patrick served as Director of the event. The sixth grade students were bused to the fire department where they visited eight different venues that ranged from fire safety to ATV safety. The students were also taught about tractor safety and gun safety. Representatives from Morgan Regional Hospital taught the students how pills looked like candy and how to be safe. Representatives from the Cooperative Extension Service taught the students how difficult it was to function with certain handicaps – a favorite venue among the students because of the hands-on participation. As Wolfe County is located in rural Eastern Kentucky, the course on ATV safety is considered one of our most important.
Members of the Farm Bureau board served as volunteers at the event, the Wolfe County Farm Bureau Women’s Advisory Committee served lunch to the students, and several businesses and organizations in the community donated door prizes for the students. Each student was also given a t-shirt to commemorate the event.
This has been a very successful program in our community and plans are underway for the event during the 2011 school year.
