May 17, 2019 - Statement From Kentucky Farm Bureau President Mark Haney on Trade and Tariffs

In addition to being resourceful, hard-working and persistent, our nation’s farmers have been very patient. We have endured continued drops in net farm income, a host of natural disasters, and some of the most volatile commodity markets experienced in decades. But still we persist to the best of our ability. Now, with another round of retaliatory tariffs expected from China, along with uncertainty over a number of other national farm policy issues, many farm families feel they may be at a tipping point. We are supportive of fair and open trade. Dealing with China’s unfair trade tactics is necessary. However, we are seeing many farm families, especially young farmers, feeling more and more economic pressures every day. We encourage all parties involved to understand the agriculture industry’s urgency in getting a deal that will level that playing field and bring some certainty to farmers in this state and across the country.
