Market Update - January 15, 2014

Posted on Jan 15, 2014
CBOT futures are trading mixed with corn and wheat moderately lower. However, corn prices have so far failed to trade much, if any, below Tuesday’s lows.   Soybean futures are strong in the early 2014 contracts and weak in new-crop contracts – a familiar trend of late.  China made another soybean purchase from the US.  Soybean Oil futures are higher on short-covering as crude oil surges higher and palm oil prices increased.  Traders will remain focused on Argentina’s weather forecast which appears to be “in the middle” for now.  The stronger US dollar reacting to higher interest rates is a negative for commodities dependent on exports.

Cattle and hog futures are higher on increased optimism for rising cash markets.  The rising US equity markets are supportive.

Crude Oil futures (WTI) are up sharply on today’s EIA inventory report showing US oil stocks at a 22-month low of 350.2 million barrels, down 41.2 million barrels since November 22.  Gasoline inventories grew a little more than expected.
