Market Update - August 29, 2014

Posted on Aug 29, 2014
CBOT futures are mostly lower with Thursday’s gains wiped out. Soybean oil fell to new contract lows on the weakness in global vegoil prices, especially palm oil. Traders will monitor the geo-political environment (Britain raised its terror threat level) and weather forecasts on Monday evening as the electronic markets open. The next Crop report comes on September 11.

The US dollar also reversed yesterday’s weakness and is back near the highs set earlier this week. The US Dollar Index @ 82.61 hasn’t been this high since September 2013. The next target would be the July 2013 high of 84.75.

Cattle futures are firm with the expiring August contract jumping to near $156/cwt on ideas the cash cattle market will hold steady this week. But at midday, boxed beef is sliding lower with Choice down .90 to 245.99/cwt.

Hog futures are sharply higher on cash market enthusiasm as well. The October LH contract has now surpassed the 20-day moving average; there’s little chart resistance in the way.
