Market Update - April 7, 2014

Posted on Apr 7, 2014
CBOT futures are trading lower with most contracts are at/near the day’s lows. A 2014/15 soybean sale to China has lifted soybean futures early but this market has turned south. Corn and soybean futures still remain in uptrends and not too far off the new highs established last week.  USDA will update the supply-demand tables on Wednesday at 11 am CT. A lack of rain in the central/southern Plains will become more concerning as the season progresses.

Cattle futures are mostly lower in follow-through selling from Friday’s sharp drop in futures and in boxed beef values ($3-4/cwt). Friday’s limit-down moves in Lean Hog futures was also a negative factor.

Lean Hog futures are trading mixed today.  Buying is coming from higher midday pork values and bargain hunting after LH futures suffered huge losses last week.

US equities are moving lower as traders fear the beginning of earnings report this week will prove disappointing.  Thus, money is moving into “safer” investments such as Treasuries so rates are weakening. The Russia/Ukraine situation may be heating up again.
