Market Closes - September 22, 2015

Posted on Sep 22, 2015
Today was “turnaround Tuesday” as funds sold futures versus buying on Monday. Financial markets were down sharply due to concerns for China and fears the Fed will raise rates in 2015; this also pressed crude oil down most of the day. The US Dollar strengthened again today; it’s up 2% in the last 3 trading days and is approaching the early-month high of 96.6. With corn and bean harvest progressing quickly due to dry weather, it’s hard to see much upside potential in the very short run. Watch the soybean meal chart as the October SM contract is sitting on chart support at $304/ton; the contract low is $286/ton. Wheat futures traded lower through 9:30 am but then rallied the rest of the day to minimize losses.

Cattle futures closed lower except for the expiring September FC contract(on Thursday). The overall bearishness in financials, energy and a stronger US Dollar weighed on the market. The boxed beef market collapsed during the afternoon, so October LC futures fell another dollar/cwt by late day. Choice beef down 2.77 at 222.77; Select down 3.36 at 216.79

Lean Hog futures closed lower, reversing Monday’s push to new highs. The losses in the cattle pit and the higher US Dollar weighed on the market. FOB Plant Pork dropped .18 to 83.50 compared to -.74 at midday; weaker belly and loin values offset gains in butt, rib and ham prices. The Quarterly Hogs & Pigs Report comes out Friday afternoon.
