Market Closes - October 12, 2016
Posted on Oct 12, 2016CBOT futures closed much lower with corn and wheat suffering the worst losses in reaction to USDA’s 11 a.m. crop production and supply-demand reports. Futures held up for about 10 minutes but eventually headed south for the balance of the session. USDA numbers were not far off traders’ expectations but they confirmed the huge crop sizes and world supplies. Technically, today’s price action is bearish.
Cattle futures closed sharply lower with many contracts making new contract lows. Futures remain under pressure as the cash market looks weaker this week; some trade has been reported at $98.00/cwt. Boxed beef dropped today with Choice Beef closed down 1.68 to 181.50 and Select fell .57 to 172.18.
Lean Hog futures closed moderately higher on short-covering in an oversold market. Steady cash hog prices and stronger pork values lifted the market. FOB Plant Pork gained .89 to 73.06 with strong gains in the values of loins and hams.
