March 15 Crop Insurance Deadline Nears

CBOT futures closed lower for a second day with corn and wheat ending close to the day’s lows.  Wheat led the way down as the US Dollar strengthened. Sharply lower crude oil futures weighed on the market. Midday tomorrow, USDA will release its monthly WASDE report which should reconfirm huge South American soybean supplies.

Cattle futures managed modest gains at the closing bell after a volatile trading day. Cattle rallied sharply in the opening minutes but tested the negative side by mid-morning before recovering some by the close. Markets were supported by stronger boxed beef markets, lower corn prices, and light cash trade at $123.69 on the Fed Cattle Exchange. Choice carcasses closed up 1.61 at 213.61; Select up 2.24 at 207.29.

Lean Hog futures closed mostly lower beyond the nearby April LH contract which is supported by its $4 discount to the CME Cash Index. Pressure came from weaker cash hog prices and pork prices. FOB Plant Pork ended down .65 at 81.06 due to a nearly 4% drop in loin value.

Crude Oil futures crashed more than 5% (3-month lows) as U.S. crude inventories grew more than expected. A rising US Dollar due to rising interest rates weighs on commodity prices.
