CBOT futures closed sharply lower with corn taking the biggest hit – the September Corn contract made new lows for the current downtrend, hitting a level last seen in January. The CBOT was pressured by improved chances of rain next week, lower energy futures, disappointing weekly export sales and reports that Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the U.N. will achieve an agreement to let Ukraine export more grain via the Black Sea. Soybean futures traded to new lows for the current move down; this is also at prices not seen since January.

Cattle futures closed mixed with Live Cattle slightly lower and Feeder Cattle slightly higher. Live cattle have basically moved sideways since Monday’s small rally. A strong weekly beef export sales report limited losses. Choice beef fell 2.77 to 267.76 and Select slid 1.72 to 240.53. Beef movement was a little weak with 105 loads. USDA reported negotiated cash trading was limited. Kansas saw some at $136/cwt, down $1 from last week. Western Corn Belt traded $232/cwt, up $2 from last week.

Lean hog futures closed slightly lower except for the nearby August LH contract. August LH has gapped higher three days this week, gaining a total of around $6.00/cwt. October is up $3.00 over this time period. August has been supported by a very strong cash hog market. This morning’s strong weekly pork export sales added to the favorable fundamentals. FOB Plant Pork ended down .47 at 123.90 after being up 2.20 in the morning. A big 15-cent gain in the belly value closed out at up 2 to 197 cents/lb. Pork movement of 276 loads was strong.
