The $1,500 Women’s Educational Grant is awarded annually to a female non-traditional student who is interested in resuming her education after leaving school to fulfill either family or work-related responsibilities.
Atherton is a staff nurse in the critical care unit of Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. She recently completed her undergraduate studies at Western Kentucky University (WKU), receiving a bachelor’s degree in nursing. With the financial assistance offered through the KFB Women’s Educational Grant, Atherton now intends to return to WKU and pursue the additional education needed to become a family nurse practitioner.
In her grant application, Atherton stated that obtaining an additional degree will not only allow her to reach her career goals, but it will also help her improve the quality of life of others.
