Another Young Farmer Winter Leadership Conference is in the books and I'm reminded each time we go to an event how lucky we are to have such a great program in Kentucky!  With over 300 young farmers there, it is such a unique opportunity to network & visit with people from across the state who share in our passion for agriculture.  You can learn about what other county Young Farmer groups are doing to help get more active members and to be the voice of agriculture.  Also, what other people may've tried on their operations that is working well for them or maybe some lessons they've learned too.  Just a great chance to really take time to develop ourselves instead of always focusing on the day-to-day operations of the farm.

There were workshops on livestock, precision farming, health insurance, financing, and a few others.  One of the things I appreciate most is the family atmosphere though.  There are sessions for the kids to go to so the parents can get the most out of their workshops.  This year we had the mobile science units and along with other fun activities, the kids got to make their own glue putty and bouncy balls.  The crazy weather put a damper on the afternoon tours, so we got in some extra pool time and a nap for the kiddos.  We really do have a second family with our "Farm Bureau friends" and I can't wait to see them all again in E-town this July for the Summer Outing!  If you haven't gotten the chance to ever attend a Kentucky Farm Bureau Young Farmer event, we'd love to have you!

Amanda Gajdzik farms full-time in Shelby County with her husband, Matt. They have two children. They have row crops, a cow-calf operation, burley tobacco, and an apple & peach orchard along with Mulberry Orchard, their on-farm agritourism market. She serves on the State Young Farmer Advisory Committee.
