Community Focus - Third Annual Nelson County Fair Public Speaking and Talent Contests

The third annual Nelson County Fair Public Speaking and Talent Contests were held Thursday, July 12, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at the Nelson County Civic Center Bardstown, Kentucky. The purpose of the talent contest is to recognize young people and give them an opportunity to perform before audiences to gain valuable experience in the talent and entertainment field. The purpose of the speaking contest is to promote youth involvement in county activities and to recognize leadership, achievements and awards in their schools and communities.
The Nelson County Farm Bureau provided all the cash prize awards while the Nelson County Fair Board awarded Fair Passes for the up-coming Fair, Chapter FFA Club Advisors awarded plaques and Nelson County 4-H Extension awarded Champion and Blue Ribbons.
Nelson County Farm Bureau Contest Coordinator Jean Jury introduced Jan Ballard, President of the Bardstown Chamber of Commerce, as Master of Ceremony. Ballard introduced seven talent contestants and four public speakers.
After the scores were finalized Ballard announced the open show winners; Female Public Speaker $100 Winner was Rachel Young and $50 Female Runner-up was Lindsey Shain. Male Public Speaker $100 Winner was Chandler Young and $50 Male Runner-up was Kyle Schenck. Talent Show $100 Winner was Erica Nicole Miles and $50 Runner-up was Lauren Grace Miles.
Next Ballard awarded the Nelson County Farm Bureau Awards to the following; Female Outstanding Youth $100 Award to Rachel Young and $50 Female Outstanding Youth Runner-up to Lindsey Shain. Male Outstanding Youth $100 Winner was Chandler Young and $50 Outstanding Youth Male Runner-up was Kyle Schenck. Variety Show $100 Winner was Lauren Grace Miles and $50 Variety Show Runner-up was Marley Pierce Evans.
As Ballard announced the FFA winners Nelson County High School Chapter FFA Advisor John Hammond was on hand to present the 1st Place Plaque to Rachel Young and the new Thomas Nelson High School Chapter FFA Advisor Jacob Ball presented the Runner-up Plaque to Kyle Schenck.
Ballard was proud to announce that nine of the eleven participants were 4-H club members. She announced the 4-H winners of the Speech Contest as Nelson County Extension 4-H Program Assistant Judy Creech presented the Champion Ribbon to Rachael Young and Participation Ribbons to Kyle Schenck, Lindsey Shain, and Chandler Young. For the Talent Contest, Creech presented the Champion Ribbon to Marley Pierce Evans and Participation Ribbons to Bailey Renee Bertrand, Clay Isaac Cecil, Mary Katherine Cecil, and Kaylea Nichole Smathers. She emphasized that all participants are champions even though only one could receive the champion ribbon!
The Nelson County Farm Bureau Outstanding Youth and Variety Show Contests were held with the help of Secretary Nancy Miller, Women’s Chair Geraldine Flaugher, Contest Coordinator Jean Jury, directors and members Elaine Roche, Anita Schenck and Sarah Wheatley.
