Community Focus - Nelson County Farm Bureau Hosts Spelling Bee

The Nelson County Farm Bureau hosted its invitational 2014 Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee at the office at 106 Reardon Boulevard on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Once again retired English teacher Patsy Seay was pronouncer for the event. Retired Nelson County 4-H Assistant Judy Creech and Cedar Creek Baptist Church secretary Becky Curtsinger, the official judges, made sure all the rules were followed.
Grades 3 through 8 from thirteen schools applied to compete in this hour long event. Parents, friends and teachers packed into the conference room to witness these amazing students who were their school’s winners.
The first place $200 winner was Lauren Roby of Bardstown Elementary. She spelled the last word "access" correctly after spelling the second to the last word correctly when second place winner Joseph Bautista of Old Kentucky Home Middle School misspelled the word "rouge". He received the second place prize of $75. Third place $50 prize was won by Abby Taylor of Bloomfield Elementary.
Other school winners attending were: Reagan Phelps - Bardstown Elementary, Nathan Fell - Bloomfield Middle, Jordan Dixon - Bluegrass Christian, John Curtis Nelson - Boston Elementary, Carson Mouser - Cox's Creek Elementary, Amelia Watkins - St. Catherine Academy, Leighanne Lyvers - St. Gregory the Great and Chris Rice - St. Joseph School.
In March the Nelson County Farm Bureau first place winner Lauren Roby will participate in the Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee in Louisville, Ky.
Adam Wheatley, Master of Ceremony, introduced President Steve Franklin, who opened the event with a welcome and congratulations to each school winner. Nelson County Farm Bureau Board of Directors, using membership dues, sponsored the prizes and refreshments for this event. Assisting with the event were Jean Jury, Holly Bischoff and Sarah Wheatley.
