Community Focus - 2012 Annual Meeting

President Steve Franklin called the Nelson County Farm Bureau annual meeting to order on Tuesday evening on October 9, 2012 held at the Nelson County Civic Center. Representative David Floyd led an invocation before over 100 people enjoyed the evening meal catered by the leaders, parents and members of the Nelson County 4-H Shooting Sports Club. After a delicious meal Franklin recognized all the guests which included Nelson County Farm Bureau Insurance Agency Manager Jack Allen and agency personnel.

Franklin gave the President’s Address. His spoke of this year’s participation in agricultural leadership, educational opportunities, and community involvement by the members of the Nelson County Farm Bureau. Accolades went to the Board for their award of the $500 Mini-Grant for the “A Farming We Will Go, Tic Tac Toe” game to be distributed in the 20 third grade classrooms throughout the County. He also praised the Board for a successful “Ag Day at the Fair” which was held on Saturday, July 21, 2012. Franklin commended the “Local Membership Discount Program” which the members are entitled to as a privilege of the $25 membership.

Franklin asked Director Jean Jury for a report about the results of the third annual Outstanding Youth and Variety contests. She congratulated the Nelson County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee, Bardstown Chamber of Commerce, 4-H Extension and Nelson County FFA Chapter for their combined leadership in the annual Nelson County Fair Public Speaking and Talent Contests held at this Nelson County Civic Center on Thursday, July 12, 2012. She announced the winners of these contests. Female Outstanding Youth winner was Rachel Young. Male Outstanding Youth Winner was Chandler Young. Variety Contest Winner was Lauren Grace Miles. Jury announced that each of these winners would receive the $100 prize on November 1, 2012 at the Collins High School in Shelbyville, Kentucky and compete against eleven Fifth District counties.

Director John Hart gave the membership report followed by Agency Manager Jack Allen who gave the insurance report. The following nominees to the two year term on the Board of Directors for the Nelson County Farm Bureau were the following: Kent Bischoff, Jeff Eaves, John Filiatreau, Steven Greenwell, John Hart, Charles Heil, Mack Holt, Freddy Jury, Jean Jury, Tom Reed Anita Schenck, and Doris White. Unanimous decision was received to approve these for the Board of Directors.

Franklin was re-elected as President and Jimmy Monin was re-elected as Vice-President. Franklin then received a unanimous decision to approve last year’s minutes and treasurer’s report. Director Jack Roche presented the fiscal year financial report and received unanimous approval from the Board. Director Eddie Hicks promoted the local membership service drive with lists circulated on each table during the meeting.

Tommy Hart announced Kent Bischoff as the winner of the 2012 Farmer of the Year. He then read the letter of recommendation and awarded the plaque. Next, Director Elaine Roche presented a framed certificate to Director Jean Jury for the “Recognition of Service Award” for 2012.

Director Tom Hart presented a resolution to be submitted for Kentucky Farm Bureau to consider in their policy changes. Under the current American Farm Bureau Policy Booklet, page 77, line 52(3) as read, “The IRS should diligently pursue removal of tax-exempt status to animal rights organizations whose level of political activity exceeds the level allowed for charitable organizations” the Nelson County Farm Bureau would add, “additionally, all monies collected for the care of dogs and cats be used for that purpose only”. Motion carried to approve the Resolution.

Jean Jury next read a memorial for Beulah Parrott Barlow, a long-time Women’s Committee member, who at 93 years young died on June 30, 2012 of this year. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Manuel T. Barlow, who was also a Nelson County Farm Bureau Director during his time.

The Nelson County Farm Bureau’s 2012 Annual Meeting adjourned after door prizes were awarded.
