The 120: Boyd County
In Boyd County, Kentucky, admire historic architecture and crank some classic Kentucky tunes on the Country Music Highway.

Boyd County is tucked into the far eastern corner of Kentucky, separated from the states of Ohio and West Virginia only by the winding Ohio River. Framed by the ancient Appalachian Mountains, this scenic county offers something for everyone.
Ashland, the most populated city in the county, is a hub bustling with family-friendly attractions. Camp Landing Entertainment District is a one-stop shop for fun, including a Malibu Jack’s indoor theme park, a cinema, axe-throwing, and high-definition sports simulators. Roll back in time at Garden Roller Rink, a classic skating rink with the disco ball still turning. The historic Paramount Arts Center hosts entertainment for the whole family, from musicians and comedians to theatrical productions. Fun fact: The video for Billy Ray Cyrus’s iconic hit “Achy Breaky Heart” was filmed here! This venue is beautifully frozen in time; its decadent 1930s art deco features are as much of an attraction as the onstage talent.
Admirers of historical architecture should stroll down the block to see Camayo Arcade. A feast for the eyes, this historic shopping gallery was the first indoor shopping mall in Kentucky. Inside, make sure to pop into the popular, longtime eatery, Jim’s Hotdogs and Spaghetti, for a hot dog the way the locals like it: with chili and slaw. If the arcade’s got you yearning for more architectural heritage, enjoy a historic walking tour featuring extravagant private residences and storied storefronts. A fascinating stop on the walking tour is the Adena Mound site, six burial mounds believed to have been built by the Adena Culture. This historically significant site sits within Ashland’s 47-acre Central Park. Visit the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center to learn more about the area’s rich history and enjoy interactive exhibits with your little ones.
For a convenient weekend getaway, enjoy some quality quiet time at Oasis Point RV Resort & Adventure Lake. This family-owned RV park boasts a refreshing spring-fed lake, complete with a zipline and slide. Off-road enthusiasts can ride to their hearts’ content at Rush Off-Road Park, which features 100+ miles of trails for all skill levels. Bring your ATV, UTV, dirt bike, or 4x4 and traverse this natural 7,000-acre playground.
All that exploring is sure to build up an appetite! There’s a buffet of options for local flavor in the region. Pizzas are works of art at Backyard Pizza and Raw Bar of Kentucky, with pies featuring unique combos like black beans and jerk chicken or BBQ pork and toasted pickles. Stay awhile at Jerk Riley’s Billiards and Irish Pub. Order up their deviled eggs, wings, or crispy tater kegs while enjoying live music or a game of pool. Kel’s Tavern is another great spot for live music and comfort food. Speaking of comfort food, you must try the biscuits and gravy at Uncle Paul and Missy’s Country Kitchen!
Though it’s a blast to explore the bustling areas of Ashland, sometimes there’s nothing better than a classic Sunday drive. Did you know that Boyd County is the start of the famous Country Music Highway (US-23)? This 144-mile-long stretch celebrates the famed musicians who grew up in the area, from Chris Stapleton and Tyler Childers to Loretta Lynn and Patty Loveless. Grab a milkshake for the road from Crisp’s Dairy Treat Summit, hit the open road, and crank up some Dwight Yoakam as you soak up the sights on this scenic byway!
