National Ag Week

I want to thank you for your continued effort to educate both children and consumers about the true value of American agriculture. Children especially need to understand how agriculture meets their most basic needs and enriches their lives economically, environmentally, and socially. Over the past few years, Farm Bureau volunteers have successfully used National Ag Day and Kentucky Ag Literacy Week as an opportunity to promote Kentucky agriculture by reading an “Accurate Ag Book” in classrooms throughout the state. This year we are again asking women to participate in this Ag Literacy effort during National Ag Day, Wednesday, March 18th and Kentucky Ag Literacy Week, Sunday, March 15th- Saturday, March 21st.

THE APPLE ORCHARD RIDDLE, by Margaret McNamara and G. Brian Karas has received the American Farm Bureau Federation’s (AFBF) Ag Book-of-the-Year designation. The book, educator’s guide and ag mags are available for ordering at jettdirect.com/AFBF/. These items can also be ordered at a discounted price through the Kentucky Farm Bureau state office by emailing Kim Moses, Administrative Assistant, at Kim.Moses@kyfb.com.

Below are additional resources and websites you can visit for more support:

American Farm Bureau Recommended Book List - a list of accurate agricultural books can be downloaded at agfoundation.org/. American Farm Bureau recommends the books that accurately portray American agriculture. Most of these books are readily available at local bookstores and online at Amazon.com. Additionally, a few accurate ag books can be purchased at the above AFBF Foundation website.

National Ag Day Website – The Agriculture Council of America (ACA) has assembled a number of resources to help you plan and host an Ag Day event in your local community at agday.org/.You can also download Ag Day logos, scripts, and other tips, tools, and resources from this website to help ensure your event's success.

We are asking you to share your successful Ag Literacy activities and events with us by completing the enclosed form and returning it to the KFB State Office by Friday, April 10th. This information can also be found on the KFB website at: kyfb.com. By filling out this form, you will be helping us expand the program in the future. Your help is greatly appreciated!

We encourage you to take advantage of this educational opportunity that will enable you to reach Kentucky’s youth with factual and valuable agricultural information. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at (502) 495-5000, extension 7221 or by email at Scott.Christmas@kyfb.com.
