Farm Bureau Survey: Thanksgiving Dinner Cost Rises Only a Penny

The American Farm Bureau Federation’s 34th annual survey of classic items found on the Thanksgiving Day dinner table indicates the average cost of this year’s feast for 10 is $48.91, or less than $5.00 per person. This is a 1-cent increase from last year’s average of $48.90.

CBOT futures closed mixed with corn and soybeans continuing to be pressured by fund selling and a lack of export demand. Live cattle closed slightly higher through June 2020 and feeder cattle ended unchanged to slightly lower.  Lean hog futures closed sharply lower due to Tuesday’s sharp drop in the pork cutout, huge production, lack of technical chart support and reports that the US/China Phase 1 deal won’t happen in 2019.

CBOT futures closed steady to higher with KC Wheat posting the best gains. Corn and soybean futures bounced off Monday’s new lows on technical short-covering. Cattle futures closed little changed after trading lower during the day. Lean hog futures closed lower, making new lows not seen since early September.

CBOT futures closed mostly lower led by KC wheat, which was the big gainer yesterday.  The cattle market finally snapped today from cash prices being sharply discounted to futures. Lean Hog futures also closed lower with the nearby December LH down sharply, settling at chart support.

Two Kentuckians are being awarded significant honors from Kentucky Farm Bureau. Brooke Stansbury of Knox County is the 2019 KFB Communications Award winner and Julie Fritsch of Bourbon County has been named the 2019 Farm Public Relations Award recipient.
