KFB Marketbasket Survey Shows Increase in Food Prices for Second Straight Quarter

After two years of slight quarterly declines in food prices, the most recent Kentucky Farm Bureau (KFB) Marketbasket Survey indicates a food-cost increase for a second straight quarter.

The survey, taken four times each year, price-checks 40 basic food items throughout the state in an effort to gauge current food-price trends. Since the end of 2016, surveyed food items had dropped by a total of $3.79 or just over three percent.

The Kentucky Joint Tax Expenditure Task Force is studying more than 600 tax exemptions to determine which ones are still relevant and if there needs to be a way to subset some of the exemptions.  Task Force member Jason Petrie, who serves as the 16th District State Representative, talks about the exemptions being studied and the potential effect on agriculture.

The number of suicides among farm families is continuing to rise according to the Center for Disease Control.  Hancock County Extension Agent, Evan Tate, is partnering with the Hancock County Farm Bureau to host “Focus on Farm Families and Stress”, a seminar that will be conducted by Dr. Deborah Reed on July 16 at the Hawesville United Methodist Church.

CBOT futures closed steady to much lower with Chicago wheat leading the way down. Wheat was pressured by large supplies and strong export competition. Corn dropped on above-average crop ratings and forecasts for rain next week to keep the crop looking strong.  Live Cattle weakened in the 2018 contracts and edged higher for 2019 contracts. Feeder Cattle posted small gains as the CBOT dropped.
