Down the Backroads

During a recent visit to West Kentucky, I decided to make the return trip an adventure and stay off the Interstate/Parkway for as long as possible. Nothing wrong with our wonderful Interstate system, but I do enjoy the scenery that can only be found on the less beaten paths.

More than sixty youth livestock exhibitors were recognized for their hard work on August 23rd during the first Kentucky State Fair Championship Drive.  North American International Livestock Exposition Assistant Manager Catherine Riley talks about the Championship Drive, some of the winners and how exhibitors showing the top steers, market hogs, sheep and goats were recognized.

CBOT futures closed mixed with wheat finishing sharply lower, but well off the day’s lows.  Live Cattle futures closed modestly higher on renewed optimism for the cash market amid ideas beef consumption was strong over Labor Day weekend. Lean Hog futures closed higher with support from a stronger pork market and optimism for cash hog prices.

CBOT futures closed steady to lower with the settlements near the day’s lows. Corn and soybean futures are holding just above contract lows as harvest of a huge crop is getting started. Cattle futures closed higher on little market news. Lean Hog futures closed lower with a sharp drop in the October LH, despite stronger pork values.

While in Louisville at the Kentucky State Fair, Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the President is in support of Ethanol.  Wheeler discussed what is being proposed concerning an Ethanol standard and how it will be implemented.  He also discussed Dicamba and said a decision will be made by November that will give farmers guidelines to start planting winter crops.

Acting Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler says he wants to give farmers a chance to make the Waters of the United States Rule something that will work on their farm.  Host Alan Watts discusses the WOTUS role, how it could affect farmers and what changes could be coming in the rule with the EPA Administrator, who was in Kentucky August 24.
