Kentucky Production Agri-Tech (KPAT) Initiative

The backbone of Kentucky’s agriculture industry is the existence of family-owned production farms and supporting businesses located in every region of the state. Often small operations, these entities make up the majority of the ag industry in the Commonwealth, therefore representing a significant portion of the state’s overall economic development structure.

Corn futures ended nearly unchanged but wheat and soybeans closed down mostly 4-6 cents/bushel. Cattle futures closed higher led by the feeder contracts due to the weaker CBOT. Lean hog futures closed higher except for the February contract dropping 65 cents.

Corn and soy complex futures closed stronger with new contract highs and contract high closes. Cattle futures closed mixed with live cattle slightly higher and feeder cattle down 45-90 cents. Lean hog futures closed lower with bigger losses in the nearby contracts.

Market Closes - January 5, 2021

Grain and soy complex futures closed strongly higher but well short of the day’s highs, especially in soy contracts. It was turnaround Tuesday in cattle futures with Live Cattle erasing Monday’s big losses, but feeder futures gained less as the CBOT surged higher. Lean hogs futures closed slightly higher except for the nearby February LH losing 30 cents.

CBOT future managed only a mixed close after trading sharply higher Sunday evening through the night.  Cattle futures closed sharply lower on the first day of 2021. Lean hog futures closed strongly higher across the board on support from a very strong pork market in the morning.
