Market Closes - October 13, 2014

Posted on Oct 13, 2014
CBOT futures closed higher with huge gains in corn and soybean futures on the rain-delayed harvest and dry weather in Brazil. A weaker US dollar was also supportive. Funds were big buyers in corn and the soy complex. Harvest should get back on track later this week. The 6-14 day NWS outlook shows below normal rainfall throughout the grain belt. USDA will release its crop condition/progress report tomorrow afternoon.

Cattle futures closed higher, offsetting some of last week’s late selloff. The support came from last week’s strong finish to the cash cattle market despite the weakness in futures. Boxed beef moved higher today with Choice carcasses up 0.64 at 248.31; Select up 1.67 at 236.41/cwt. Last week’s 5-Area Cash price was over $3.50 higher than the previous week.

Lean Hog futures closed narrowly mixed with the nearby October LH contract expiring tomorrow. October LH futures are in line with the cash index. FOB Plant Pork dropped 1.06 to 121.57/cwt. Focus turns to the $15.00 discount from cash to the December futures price – the seasonal trend lower is obvious.

Tomorrow is the last trading day for OCTOBER lean hogs, soybean meal and soybean oil.
