The Kentucky State Fair Board has entered into a preliminary agreement with the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) to begin co-promotion of the National Farm Machinery Show in 2018.  President and CEO of the fair board, Jason Rittenberry, says while the fair board will retain full ownership of the show, AEM will bring its expertise and resources to make the annual event even larger and more visitor friendly.

Just under 300 members of Kentucky Farm Bureau will be in Washington D.C. this week doing a little grassroots lobbying with the state’s Congressional delegation. Farm group president, Mark Haney of Pulaski County, discusses a few of the issues of interest to agriculture; from regulatory reform to keeping international trade doors open, and from the next new Farm Bill to dealing with immigration reform and guest worker programs.

Feldhaus visits with UK forage specialist, Ray Smith, about successful testing and development of a tall fescue variety that grows well in this region’s soil and climate conditions, and which avoids a negative impact that some other tall fescue varieties have, negatively impacting weight gain in cattle.  The new variety was perfected at UK and bears the name of Gary Lacefield, long-time UK forage specialist, now retired.

An official with the Ky Division of Fish and Wildlife discusses a fairly popular cost share program they have available for farmers he can plant some special crops and allow public access to a few of their acres for dove hunting next fall.  He says successful applicants can earn up to $10,000 for participation.

A feature report on an Owen County farmer, David Chappell, who’s added vegetable production and a roadside market venue to his beef, tobacco, and hay production. Chappell explains that so far, his new venture fits quite well in his operation. Chappell will be attending Farm Bureau’s Roadside Educational meeting March 16 in Bowling Green.

Feldhaus features Ky Ag Commissioner Ryan Quarles discussing some legislative goals he has for this session of the Ky General Assembly.  He’s working with lawmakers to increase a tax credit that will help farmers make more crop donations to feeding agencies. There’s also a measure planned to protect grocery chains that make food contributions to help the hungry.
