Melissa Miller, Executive Director of the Ky 4-H Council, talks about the Triple Crown of Kentucky agriculture, 4-H, FFA, and Ky Proud; as those entities are the beneficiaries of the state’s “Ag Tag” program, encouraging farmer donations at license renewal time.  Miller highlights a few of last year’s leading donation counties.

Five streamlined systems for utilizing existing fences to more easily feed hay to cattle will be on display by the Kentucky Beef Network at the Eden Shale Farm in Owen County. Industry Coordinator, Dan Miller, says all of the systems can help increase efficiencies and cut hay loss, and make it easier for lone farmers to get their feeding done.

A report on a feasibility study underway through the Hopkinsville Elevator on developing export markets for Kentucky-grown canola.  The facility’s Ben Westerfield says farmer interest in the crop in that region is high and that their facility can handle the crop with its current mix of grains.  They’re working now to firm up export buyers.

“The Most Wonderful Dream,” a Kentucky based ag accurate book will serve as the focus for Ag Literacy Week activities across the state this week.  Anderson County’s Sue Litkenhus says, in her county, local farm leaders will go into schools to read that book to youngsters and provide other educational opportunities with an ag theme for their local schools.

“The Most Wonderful Dream,” is the name of a new book authored and illustrated by Kentucky’s own, nationally renowned illustrator, Mitchell Tolle.  Butler County’s Betty Farris, a member of Ky Farm Bureau’s state women’s committee, says that book is at the center of “Ag Literacy Week” activities next week in schools throughout Kentucky.

For the fourth year in a row the Spencer County FFA Dairy Judging Team has won that National FFA competition and this summer will head to Scotland for an international dairy event.  Local FFA advisor, Bland Baird, talks about the tradition of the teams national performance over the years and explains that team members are now in fund raising mode to make that trip possible.

A feature report with a Hardin County grain farmer who’s made a connection with a regional brokerage firm to supply a local distillery with corn.  Larry Thomas says the buyers have a few specifications for how the crop is handled and delivered, but he feels most farmers could easily accommodate their requirements and earn a little bonus in the sale as well.

March is the month in Kentucky when holders of the customized “farm license plates,” do their annual registration.  Ky FFA Foundation director, Sheldon McKinney says it’s also time for them to consider a $10 Ag Tag donation, which last year netted $182,000 for the youth organization, with 50% of that going back to local chapters.
