The Kentucky Natural Resource Conservation Service is under the direction of Brunilla Velez, who hails from Rhode Island. Velez talks about her work in Kentucky, the conservation programs being utilized by farmers in the Bluegrass and some of the highlights of her time here since she began serving as Interim NRCS Director in August.

Central Kentucky farmers are facing some challenges due to a wet harvest season. Breckinridge County Agriculture Extension Agent Carol Hinton says the corn and tobacco harvest has been very good, but the recent wet weather is causing some problems for corn farmers who have not been able to harvest their crops.

The Kentucky Beef Network will host its annual Open House Saturday, October 13, at Eden Shale Farm in Owen County. A highlighted event will be the demonstration of a new way to feed cattle in the winter.

The aroma of country ham will fill the air in the western Kentucky town of Cadiz on October 12 and 13 during the annual Trigg County Country Ham Festival. County Tourism Director Bill Stevens says the festival includes a country ham display, the making of Kentucky’s largest ham biscuit and a Saturday concert by Country Music group Shenandoah.

Farmers in western and central Kentucky are experiencing better corn yields than expected. Ben Westerfield, with Hopkinsville Elevator Cooperative, says most yields are hovering around 200 bushels to the acre, with the quality of the crop also good.
