Congressman James Comer (KY-01) recognized Darren Luttrell, of Beaver Dam, Kentucky, on the House floor in Washington this week for being named 2017 Farmer of the Year by the Kentucky Farm Bureau.

The Larue County Farm Bureau has been honored by the American Farm Bureau in its “County Activities of Excellence” program, and will travel to that groups national convention next month in Nashville to display its “Farm to City Dinner” activity which drew over 375 attendees.  County Farm Bureau Women’s Chair, Leanne Ragland describes the event and the intent behind it.

The Kentucky Agriculture and Environment in the Classroom, Executive Director, Jennifer Elwell is featured in this report assessing the first year of that group’s “Sponsor a Classroom” project. Elwell says local county farm bureaus, conservation districts, and others have stepped up to purchase these unique teaching tools for local teachers.

Ohio County’s Darren Luttrell has been named Kentucky’s Farmer of the Year and next October will represent Kentucky Farm Bureau in the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Ag Expo Southeastern “Farmer of the Year” contest.  With his sons Luttrell operates on some 3,600 acres raising corn and soybeans. They also have eight broiler houses and raise about 380 head of beef cattle.

A report on UK’s projections that 2017 Ky farm cash receipts will total $5.6 billion, which is a 3.5 percent increase from 2016.  Preliminary indications also point to a modest increase in net farm income levels.  Feldhaus visits with UK Ag Economist Will Snell who discusses some of the leading factors impacting their report.

A feature report with Ben and Katie Furnish who were recently selected as Kentucky’s 2017 Outstanding Young Farm Family at the Ky Farm Bureau annual meeting. With Ben’s parents they operate more than 2,200 acres of owned or leased land producing stoker steers, burley tobacco, corn, soybeans, wheat, mixed hay, and for the last three years, industrial hemp.

After trading higher overnight, CBOT futures headed south when trading resumed at 830 am. Pressure came from rain in the extended South American forecast and sliding energy futures.  Cattle futures closed lower in Live Cattle to sharply lower in Feeder Cattle. Futures were pressured by weaker boxed beef values and expectations that fed cattle will trade lower than last week’s average over $120/cwt.
