Market Closes - April 18, 2019

Going into the 3-day Easter Weekend, CBOT futures closed narrowly mixed, in most cases. There’s little new for traders to act on and the spec funds already have large short positions in place. Cattle futures closed mostly higher and near the day’s highs. Lean Hog futures closed mixed with the nearby May and June LH contracts posting nice gains

These contracts closed at/near the day’s lows.  Cattle futures closed slightly lower nearby and posted small gains in August-forward contracts. CBOT futures closed mixed. Corn and soybean futures closed slightly higher as traders wait for confirmation of a US/China trade deal. Cattle futures closed higher on stronger boxed beef values and Friday’s stronger cash cattle market.  Lean Hog futures closed higher with bigger gains in distant months. LH continue to be supported by pork values and ideas that China is buying large quantities of US pork.

Corn and soybean futures closed higher on fund buying, unfavorable weather forecasts and strong soybean export sales. Support also came from the President’s positive comments on the trade negotiations. Live and feeder cattle futures closed strongly higher. Beyond the soon-to-expire April LH contract, LH futures closed sharply higher.

Without any real fundamental support, CBOT futures closed mostly higher and near the day’s highs.  Live Cattle posted moderate gains with Feeder Cattle rallying stronger. These markets continue to be supported by bad feedlot conditions, weather-related death losses, strong beef demand from the financially-healthy consumer and soaring Lean Hog futures.

CBOT futures were mostly steady except for strong gains in wheat futures. Outside markets, including higher crude oil, were positive today with the US Dollar weakening as Treasury Yields fell sharply after the FOMC suggested it didn’t expect any interest rate increase in 2019. Lean Hog futures closed up the daily trading limit of $3.00/cwt (the limit is $4.50 tomorrow).

CBOT futures were mostly lower today, weighed down by poor export inspections for last week and a Chinese newspaper saying Trump/Xi won’t meet before June.  Cattle futures closed mostly higher with small gains. The April Live Cattle contract dropped .77 to 128.32 on pressure from Friday’s $127/cwt cash trade. LH posted big gains today as traders turn more bullish on Chinese pork demand because China’s ASF outbreak is still not under control.

CBOT futures closed mixed with gains probably attributable to short-covering by the very short spec funds. Cattle futures closed higher with better gains in the LC market. Lean Hog futures closed sharply higher, supported by stronger cash hog and pork values, as well as this morning’s very large pork export sales estimate.

CBOT futures closed mixed as the market generally failed to see follow-through from Tuesday’s strong rally. Cattle futures closed narrowly mixed. Beyond the nearby April LH 17-cent drop, LH futures posted gains with last-half 2019 contracts showing big advances. Traders will closely study tomorrow morning’s Weekly Export Sales report for signs of Chinese purchases.

Traders wasted no time today rallying the grain and oilseed markets with Chicago and KC Wheat leading the way higher. Cattle futures closed lower with the nearby April LC contract down sharply. Futures were pushed down by long liquidation by the spec funds who are holding a huge long position. Lean Hog futures closed higher, but by much less than seen the previous two trading days.
