LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY: Three Kentucky gospel quartets were
recognized as winners of the Gospel Quartet Contest at the Kentucky State
Fair. The event was held in conjunction with Kentucky Farm Bureau Day
on Thursday, August 26. The contest has been sponsored by Farm Bureau
for over 50 years and is open to participants from all Kentucky counties.
The State Champions were His Praise, from Christian County. Members of
the quartet are Stephen Fryar, Mare Thomas, Dale Lisembee, and Jesse Tewell.
Second place was awarded to Southern Harmony from Russell County. This
group includes Barry Flatt, Gary Wheat, Stanley Richardson and Rex Miller.
Third place winner was Water’s Edge from Oldham County. Members
are Don Blanchard, Tim Blanchard, Tim Shoner and Stu Sollman.
The groups were judged on five categories:
• Choice and expression of song
• Rhythm, tempo and dynamics
• Quality and balance of voices
• Pitch and projection
• Stage presence and general effect.
As finalists, all were asked to perform a selection at the Farm Bureau
Day Picnic.
The gospel quartet contest offers valuable prizes to the winner, including
$250 and a plaque from Kentucky Farm Bureau plus $150 and ribbons from
the State Fair. The winning group was also invited to perform at the Kentucky
State Gospel Singing Convention and will represent Kentucky at the National
Gospel Quartet Contest on September 18, 2004.
Second-place finishers received $200 and a plaque from Farm Bureau plus
$125 and a ribbon from the State Fair, while third place received $150
and a plaque from Farm Bureau plus $100 and a ribbon from the State Fair.
Eleven gospel quartets competed in the competition. Those contestants
included Newtown Quartet, Jefferson County; Hicks Family, Meade County;
The Palmer Sisters, Franklin County; Glory Train Quartet, Fayette County;
White Stone Quartet, Hart County; For God So Loved, Barren County; Henshaw
Harmony, Union County and Manna, Shelby County.
