FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY: Three finalists have been selected for this year’s Kentucky Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farm Family competition.  The contest, held annually, is open to farmers age 35 and under.

The finalists are Mitchel and Gala Logsdon, Munfordville; Scott and Mary Ann Porter, Maysville; and John and Jill Mahan, Georgetown.  The winner and two runners-up will be announced at the Kentucky Farm Bureau Annual Meeting to be held in Louisville, November 29 - December 2.

These three couples will compete for the top spot in the contest, which rates entrants on their farm management skills, Farm Bureau and community involvement, as well as financial growth. The winning couple will represent Kentucky in the national finals, to be conducted in Salt Lake City, Utah in January.

Mitchel and Gala Logsdon raise beef cattle, 8 acres of tobacco, 70 acres of alfafa and 16 acres of corn silage on their Hart County farm. They have been farming for 12 years and are currently working 520 acres.

The Porter family farms a 1,000-acre operation in Fleming County, producing alfalfa, red clover and native grasses. They also market burley tobacco and stock a large herd of Holstein heifers.

John and Jill Mahan run a 1,600-acre diversified row crop, wheat and burley tobacco farm in Georgetown. They also raise beef cattle, own an expanding sod business and turn recycled horse muck into a usable product. Both John and Jill come from multi-generational family farming operations.

In addition to an expense-paid trip to the national competition in Salt Lake City, the winners will receive a Kubota RTV, sponsored by Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance and Kubota; $1,000 from Premier Crop Insurance; $500 from Dodge Truck Division of Daimler-Chrysler; a $600 voucher from Miles Seed; a $500 voucher from Southern States and a portable handgun safe from Misty Morn Safe Company.

Second-place finisher receives 300 hours use of a Kubota tractor, $750 from Premier Crop Insurance and a $300 voucher from Southern States.

The third-place family will be awarded 100 hours use of a New Holland tractor, $500 from Premier Crop Insurance and a $200 voucher from Southern States.

New Dodge pickups will be awarded to the national winners.
