LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, August 30, 2006: Southern Harmony, a foursome from Russell County, was named State Champion of the Gospel Quartet Contest at the Kentucky State Fair. Members of the quartet are Barry Flatt, Rex Miller, Stanley Richardson and Gary Wheat.

The event was held in conjunction with Kentucky Farm Bureau Day on Thursday, August 24. The contest has been sponsored by Farm Bureau for over 50 years and is open to participants from all Kentucky counties.
Second place was awarded to Soul’s Harmony from Edmonson County. This group includes Joey Webb, Hoyt Webb, Jr., Daniel Bolton and Scott Lindsey.

Third place winner was Calvary Heirs from Lincoln County. Members are Jimmy Smith, Tommy Wood, Steve Trimble and Dennis Whitaker.
The groups were judged on five categories:
- Choice and expression of song
- Rhythm, tempo and dynamics
- Quality and balance of voices
- Pitch and projection
- Stage presence and general effect.
The finalists performed a selection at the Farm Bureau Day Picnic, in addition to their earlier appearance at the competition.
The winning quartet received $250 and a plaque from Kentucky Farm Bureau plus $150 and ribbons from the State Fair. They were also invited to perform at Kentucky Farm Bureau’s Annual Meeting and will represent Kentucky at the National Gospel Quartet Contest next month.
Second-place finishers received $200 and a plaque from Farm Bureau plus $125 and a ribbon from the State Fair, while third place received $150 and a plaque from Farm Bureau plus $100 and a ribbon from the State Fair.
Eight gospel quartets competed in the competition. Those contestants included Middletown Christian Church Quartet, Nale Family, Chatterbox Quartet, Brothers in Christ, Horizon’s, Mystic River, Brotherhood, For God So Loved and New Found Four.
