Finalists Selected in Outstanding Young Farm Family Competition

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY: Three finalists have been selected for the Kentucky Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farm Family competition held annually. The contest is open to farmers age 35 and under.

The finalists are Tony and Jamie Folz , Hopkinsville; Mitchel and Gala Logsdon, Munfordville; and Todd and Kristin Clark, Lexington. The winner and two runners-up will be announced at the Kentucky Farm Bureau convention to be held in Louisville December 8-11.

These three couples will compete for the top spot in the contest, which rates entrants on their farm management skills, Farm Bureau and community involvement, as well as financial growth. The winning couple will represent Kentucky in the national finals, to be conducted in Charlotte, North Carolina in January.

The Folz family farms 2,600 acres in partnership with Tony’s brother. They produce corn, wheat, soybeans and approximately 2.5 million tobacco transplants. They also operate a custom planting and harvesting operation.

Mitchel and Gala Logsdon own and operate a 50-cow dairy operation utilizing registered Holstein dairy cattle. In addition, they have an interest in beef cows and raise ten acres of tobacco.

Todd and Kristin Clark live on their Lexington farm with their two children. They manage a self-acquired tobacco and cattle operation and produce greenhouse-grown tobacco transplants. They also run a custom hay and straw enterprise.

In addition to an expense-paid trip to the national competition in Charlotte, the winners will receive 300 hours use of an Agco-Allis tractor, $500 from Dodge Truck Division of Daimler-Chrysler, a $500 voucher from Syngenta Crop Protection and a $400 voucher from Miles Seed.

Second-place finisher receives 300 hours use of a Kubota tractor, $400 from Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance and a $300 voucher from Miles Seed.

The third-place family will be awarded 100 hours use of a New Holland tractor, $300 from Farm Bureau Insurance and a $300 voucher from Miles seed.

New Dodge pickups will be awarded to the national winners.

This year’s young farm family finalists were selected from eight district-level winners. The other participants were Darrin and Erin Wills, Shelby County; John Russell and Kristal New, Owen County; Randy and Melissa Rowe, Lincoln County; Brian Clark, Fleming County; and James and Angela Taulbee (Clark County).
