LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY: Three finalists have been selected
for this year’s Kentucky Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farm Family
competition. The contest, held annually, is open to farmers age 35 and
under.
The finalists are Mitchel and Gala Logsdon, Munfordville; Scott and Mary
Ann Porter, Maysville; and Todd and Jeana Williams, LaCenter. The winner
and two runners-up will be announced at the Kentucky Farm Bureau convention
to be held in Louisville December 7-10.
These three couples will compete for the top spot in the contest, which
rates entrants on their farm management skills, Farm Bureau and community
involvement, as well as financial growth. The winning couple will represent
Kentucky in the national finals, to be conducted in Nashville, Tennessee
in January.
Mitchel and Gala Logsdon have an interest in beef cows and raise tobacco,
hay and corn silage.
The Porter family farms a 1,100-acre operation in Fleming County. In
addition to alfalfa, red clover and native grasses they produce burley
tobacco and brood cows.
Todd and Jeana Williams run a 2,000-acre row crop and burley tobacco
farm in partnership with Todd’s father. They live in Ballard County
with their two daughters.
In addition to an expense-paid trip to the national competition in Nashville,
the winners will receive a Kubota RTV, sponsored by Kentucky Farm Bureau
Insurance and Kubota; $1,000 from Premier Crop Insurance; $500 from Dodge
Truck Division of Daimler-Chrysler; and a $300 voucher from Miles Seed.
Second-place finisher receives 300 hours use of a Kubota tractor, $750
from Premier Crop Insurance and a $200 voucher from Miles Seed.
The third-place family will be awarded 100 hours use of a New Holland
tractor, $500 from Premier Crop Insurance and a $100 voucher from Miles
seed.
New Dodge pickups will be awarded to the national winners.
This year’s young farm family finalists were selected from seven
district-level winners. The other participants were Gary and Heather Haile,
