LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY: Four individuals have qualified to
compete in the finals of the Kentucky Farm Bureau Discussion Meet contest.
The event will be held during the Farm Bureau annual convention, set for
December 7 in Louisville.
The finalists are Sarah Lane of Lexington, Jay McElwain of Belton, Nathan
Williams of Campbellsville and Kent Moore of Versailles. The contest is
administered by Kentucky Farm Bureau and is open to young farmers ages
18-35.
The Discussion Meet contest is designed to simulate committee meetings
where discussion and active participation are expected from each participant.
Performance is evaluated on an exchange of ideas and information on a
pre-determined topic. Judges look for the contestant that offers constructive
criticism, cooperation and communication while analyzing agricultural
problems and developing solutions.
Topics of discussion this year included:
- How does the public perception of American farmers affect agriculture?
- Where will tomorrow’s agriculture work force come from?
- What risk does agri-tourism pose to national security?
The contest offers valuable prizes to the winner, including an expense-paid
trip to Nashville, TN for the national competition. The winner also receives
the choice of a Kawasaki Mule or ATV from Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance
Company and $500 from Dodge Truck Division.
Second-place finisher will get a $1,000 Dell gift card sponsored by Kentucky
Farm Bureau, while the third and fourth-place contestants will get $200
from Farm Bureau. New Dodge pickups await the national winners of this
contest.
Fifteen young farmers competed in preliminary rounds of the Discussion
Meet, held in July as part of a Farm Bureau-sponsored Young Farmer Summer
Outing.
Those contestants included Matt Johnson of Albany; Roger Miller, Lancaster;
Jordon Sawyers Hardin; Joe Bratcher, Waynesburg; Jay Campbell, Russellville;
Brad Mattingly, Lebanon; Daniel Mattingly, Bardstown; Ryan Quarles, Georgetown;
Christi Marksbury, Fairfield; Nathan Williams, Campbellsville; Curt Devine;
Morganfield; and Andrew Jackson, Corbin.
