FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, JUNE 26, 2006: Sam Moore, Butler County farmer and
immediate past president of Kentucky Farm Bureau has been named winner of
Kentucky Farm Bureau’s Farmer of the Year contest.
The contest recognizes farmers for their commitment to excellence in the
agriculture industry and their efficiency in farming practices, sound financial
management and leadership in local, state and national organizations.
Moore and his wife, Helen, purchased their first farm in 1963, when they were
each just 19 years old. On that 120-acre tract, they raised tobacco, row crops
and milked 20-30 cows.
A farmer for 43 years now, Moore produces corn, soybeans, hay and silage and
raises purebred Angus beef cattle on 4,200 acres. He is also a partner in the
Green River Feed Mill, a feed, seed, fertilizer and supply store in Morgantown.
Moore served as Kentucky Farm Bureau president for seven years, leaving
office in 2005. He has served on the state Farm Bureau Board of Directors since
1975, and has been a member of the Kentucky Ag Development Board since its
inception.
As the winner, he will represent Kentucky in the Southeastern Farmer of the
Year contest, which is sponsored by Swisher International (maker of Swisher
Sweets cigars) and the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition.
Two other finalists named in the contest were Joe Burke and Scott Travis.
Burke and his son, J.L., farm 3,550 acres near Hardinsburg, producing cattle,
corn, soybeans, wheat, and fescue seed.
Travis raises tobacco, corn, soybeans, wheat, pumpkins and alfalfa hay on his
1,300 acre farm near Taylorsville.
