RELEASE
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, October 16, 2006: Eight Kentucky sports veterans have been inducted into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame.
The inductees were honored during a Hall of Fame Banquet, held October 11 in Louisville.
The banquet, sponsored by Kentucky Farm Bureau Insurance, raised approximately $30,000 to provide financial support to Kosair Charities throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana.
Legendary National Basketball Association coach Pat Riley was included in the list of honorees. Riley was an All-American at the University of Kentucky and a member of the beloved “Rupp’s Runts”. He is best known nationally for his work in the NBA as a coach, executive and former player.
Riley has been the coach of five championship teams, an assistant coach for another, and played for one, bringing his total to seven championships overall, including last year’s title won by the Miami Heat.
Joining Riley on this prestigious list was Allan Houston, one of the all-time standout players in Kentucky high school basketball, the leading scorer at his college alma mater and one of the most consistent scorers in the NBA.
LHouston led Louisville Ballard to the 1988 Kentucky High School Athletics Association Sweet 16 championship, then went on to play for his father, Wade, at the University of Tennessee.
He was first-round draft pick of the NBA’s Detroit Pistons and was later traded to the New York Knicks, helping lead them to the 1999 NBA championship finals. Houston retired from the league with a 17.3 career scoring average.
Basketball was not the only sport represented in the list of Hall of Fame inductees. Also honored was Hillerich & Bradsby, makers of the “Louisville Slugger” baseball bat, one of the most recognized brand names in the world. Legendary players such as Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams swung bats manufactured at the Louisville facility.
Other inductees include:
- Doug Flynn, longtime infielder for the Cincinnati Reds and three other MLB teams
- Jenny Hansen, 13-time All-American gymnast at the University of Kentucky
- Clemette Haskins, three-time All-American basketball player at Western Kentucky University
- Tom Jurich, athletics director at the University of Louisville
- Bob Schnieder, the winningest coach in Kentucky prep football, at Newport Catholic High School.
