RELEASE
LOUISVILLE, KY, February 20, 2008: The Farm Bill and farm labor issues will dominate meetings this week between Kentucky farmers and the state's Congressional delegation.
About 200 Kentucky Farm Bureau members from throughout the state will be in Washington D.C. February 25-28 to take part in the organization's annual Congressional Tour. The group will meet in separate sessions with the six Kentucky representatives and will participate in a question-and-answer session with Senators Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning.
As a March 15 target date for passage of a new farm bill approaches, Kentucky Farm Bureau leaders will seize the opportunity to lobby for passage of a fiscally responsible bill that maintains the basic structure of current legislation and benefits all sectors of production agriculture. Ongoing negotiations between House and Senate leaders and the White House have centered on such contentious issues as overall spending levels, commodity program payment eligibility and conservation funds.
Farm Bureau is also seeking revisions to the H2a guest worker program which will help farmers secure a dependable workforce and establish a market-based wage scale that more accurately reflects local economic conditions.
A Congressional breakfast, the congressional office visits and the session with the senators are all scheduled for Wednesday, February 27.
On Tuesday, the Kentuckians will receive an issues briefing by Washington-based Farm Bureau lobbyists and will hear from officials from a number of federal agencies dealing with ag-related activities.
