 Haylie Canham Awarded 2008 Fayette County Farm Bureau Scholarship
Haylie Canham, this year's recipient of the Fayette County Farm Bureau Scholarship is a senior at Lexington Catholic High School. She is a member of the St. Thomas More Chapter of the National Honor Society, the Beta Club, president of the 4-H Saddleblankets Club and a Governor's Scholar. She plays Irish folk, Bluegrass and Old Appalachian fiddle as well as classical violin. She rides her horse, Stitches, competitively in hunter jumper and combined training. Besides these accomplishments, Haylie puts in many hours doing community service projects, like the Saddle Up Ride to raise funds for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. She plans to attend the University of Kentucky in the fall to study forestry. |

| Fayette County Farm Bureau Education Foundation, Inc. began
in 1996 as a non-profit organization seeking to make a difference in students
lives and in our local community’s future.
Our goal is to identify, through a competitive application and interview
process, Fayette County students who have excelled in academic, extracurricular,
and/or agricultural activities, and who are likely to make an impact on
our present and future Bluegrass Area.
We provide scholarship support to selected individuals for a maximum
of eight consecutive semesters of undergraduate studies.

| What is the total value?

A total of $20,000 is awarded at $5,000 per year. The
scholarship recipient must demonstrate measurable academic progress toward
earning a four-year undergraduate degree from an accredited college or
university. Scholarship committee decisions regarding award renewals are
final. |

| Who funds the scholarship?
|
 |
This scholarship was developed in 1996 and is funded by
Fayette County Farm Bureau to show our commitment to youth education.

| When is the deadline?
|
 |
All applications must be received by January 15th.
The scholarship is announced before High School Graduation in May. You
will be notified by mail.

| How do I qualify?
|
 |
- One parent or legal guardian must reside in Fayette County
- Be a high school senior
- You or an immediate family member must be a member of Fayette County
Farm Bureau
(If you are not a member, you may become a member prior to your interview.)
- Have a weighted or unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Have combined verbal and math SAT scores of 1000 or higher or
have a composite ACT score of 21 or higher
- Enclose an official high school transcript
- Enclose a resume’ listing activities, (extracurricular, athletic,
community, agricultural, etc.)
- Write an essay (see description below)
- If invited, interview with the committee

| What must the essay
say?

The essay should explain why you wish to attend the university
or college of your choice. It should also convey your ambitions and career
goals, and describe any past, present or future agricultural interests
or background. The essay should be no more than 2 pages in length. |

| Any further requirements?
|
 |
All recipients are expected to keep in touch with the
Scholarship Committee each year and submit a written status report at
the end of each semester. All recipients must demonstrate normal progress
towards graduation and maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher. Scholarship checks
will not be submitted to the University until an official transcript has
been received by the Farm Bureau office.
